Koi carp are, of course, a staple of Japanese art and the Japanese garden-scape in reality.
I wanted my own koi screen version, which celebrates the tradition, the fish themselves and their appearance for children's day.
The koi were photographed locally at different times and montaged into the "three koi meeting" focus of the screen, and the lilies were photographed at the local Jindai botanical gardens. The imagined gold-leaf background becomes dark water.
Extra ripple effects around the koi were created in Photoshop.
Reflected in the water, as though strung above, are the koi "flags" of a children's day festival, photographed at a local school.
